  4. White Picket Fence (Documentary) February 7th, 2014

For most people who find themselves without a place to call "home," the path to homelessness is never straight or simple. It might be made up of a string of questionable decisions - like choosing the wrong friends, or figuring that one more drink won't hurt anything. It might include losing a job, facing a medical crisis, or fighting a war. Or it could start with growing up in a dysfunctional home, where physical, emotional, or sexual abuse is a way of life. What if you worked a full-time, minimum-wage job but still couldn't afford to provide housing for your family? How would you cope with childhood trauma if all you've been taught is to use alcohol and drugs to try and forget? What if you didn't grow up inside a home that had a white picket fence? Interested in learning more? This short documentary, White Picket Fence, co-produced by Mariellyn Dunlap Grace and Ryan Grace, examines these and other questions and provides insights into the lives and realities of people experiencing homelessness. Other materials are available on the West Ohio Conference website at www.westohioumc.org/whitepicketfence.

  5. UMTV: Green Gym at Church January 11th, 2012
Detroit pastor Faith Fowler is on a mission to help her city and to save the planet. She's using donated exercise equipment and discarded tires to provide jobs and electricity. Cass Community United Methodist Church supports Cass Green Industries which has cleared thousands of tires from Detroit's vacant lots and shredded tons of documents. Solar panels heat water for homeless people in nearby housing units. And the Cass Green Gym has weight machines and stationary bikes whose pedal power creates electricity. (Courtesy of UMTV)
